12. Eco-pond and Poetry Theater

When pine trees in this area of land died from either disease or natural disaster, Mr. Wu Yung-pin, who had participated in the planning of the Fataan Wetland, led a group of volunteers to redevelop it. They introduced native aquatic plants and fishes, such as the yellow water lily, hygrophila pogonocalyx and paradise fish. The eco pond often attracts wild birds, and is a popular spot for many school excursions.

Behind the eco pond is a watering trough, which was designed by the Military Command Center for fire suppression. Because the oil-rich pine trees and wooden house in the vicinity are potential fire hazards, rainwater collected in the pond could be used by firefighters in the event of a fire.

Above the pond is the Pine Garden’s most important performance venue – the poetry theater. It’s a favorite amongst many performing groups because it provides intimate and relaxing interaction with Nature. During the annual Pacific Poetry Festival in November, poets would recite poems on the stage.
