This used to be the quarters for lower rank soldiers. They were mostly in charge of domestic duties, such as cooking and laundry washing. It is also rumored that comfort women were once housed here. To facilitate flow of visitor traffic, a part of the original wall was torn down to allow direct view to the ancient pine tree in the backyard. The timber truss roof is also completely exposed to allow people to see the technique used in Japanese architecture. Furthermore, the original beam columns were reinforced and kept in place so you can imagine what used to be a 9.91 square-meter dormitory space between the columns. Of the entire building, only two rooms are preserved. One is in the front and the other in the back of the building, which have now become the men’s room and the restaurant’s kitchen. The restored building, which is the Pine Garden restaurant today, not only serves unique beverages and meals, but also a variety of exquisite desserts. On some weekends, concerts are also held here. The lush green scenery provides a relaxing ambiance to complement the good food.
