After the US army left, the care and pruning of plants was neglected while the garden stood idle, and the plants began to flourish without restraint. As the years passed, aggressive strangler fig covered the buildings, spreading everywhere even reaching indoors.

These plants were subsequently removed when restoration work began at the Pine Garden. To catch a glimpse of the full-fledge strangulation, observe the Japanese superb fig at the main entrance. What is wrapped within its aerial roots? It’s a gatepost like the one next to the main entrance! The monstrous tree is so strong that it has even pushed over the entire gatepost. In the entrance area behind the garden, there is also a chimney that is completely enveloped by the strangler. Later on, you may like to take a detour there to have a look.
