6. Air-raid Shelter

06Air-raid Shelter

To protect themselves from air raids, Japanese soldiers built an air-raid shelter 5m long and 2m high indoor, with entrance and exit on each side. The space allotted led to the speculation that approximately 22 persons were based at the military command center at that time.

In summer, Taiwan not only has to weather typhoons but also the frequent afternoon storms. Whenever it rains incessantly for many days, you have to be impressed by the Japanese ingenuity in designing the air-raid shelter. Because the sandy floor within the shelter is slightly tilted down in the direction of the ocean, water retreats fast and thus preventing flooding even during heavy rainfalls.
