From the chimney behind the house, you can tell that it was originally a kitchen. It’s hard to imagine that before its restoration, aerial roots of the fig had once invaded the house through cracks in the walls and an actual tree was growing on the rooftop. After its restoration, the house has become a gift shop. Not only does it sell creative products that are practical for everyday use, it is also the showcase for handmade items by local artisans. It is a good place to learn more about the treasures of Hualien, and for buying lovely and thoughtful gifts for friends and relatives. In the corner of the gift shop are two rusted ovens, which were left by the Military Assistance Advisory Group in the early 60s.
